GOTU KOLA: NATURE’S NATURAL REJUVENATIVE REMEDY
Known as a “Rasayana” in Ayurveda (and not to be confused with Bacopa, Bacopa monnieri, which also goes by the name Brahmi and can be a great cerebral tonic) Gotu Kola offers an amazing plethora of healing properties!*
THE “GO-TO” NATURAL KOKA-“KOLA”
Its energy boosting properties make it a great alternative to sugary soft-drink beverages. Just steep a teaspoon or two in 8 oz of boiled water for 45 minutes and enjoy a 4 oz cup two or three times a day!**
TRADITIONAL AND MEDICINAL USES

The following benefits are a combination of medicinal benefits of Gotu Kola based on traditional benefits, documented historical uses and modern, scientific examples grounded in studies and research.
• Nootropic
The Doctrine of Signatures would indicate that the vibrant, brain-shaped leaves of this lusciously green beauty are superb for our cognitive health, and, as science would eventually come to conclude too, it turns out they are! Taking this a step further, one even notices the split in the leaf that causes it to resemble the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Interestingly, yogis regard this plant as highly spiritual and use it during meditation to balance both sides of the brain and support the crown chakra. As a cerebral tonic, Gotu Kola can help alleviate brain fog, mental exhaustion, and forgetfulness. I used it for these purposes during my bout my Lyme, but that’s not to say its use for these symptoms are limited to that cause alone. Studies have even shown its effectiveness in remedying the symptoms of early stage Alzheimer’s. And, as a neuroprotective agent, it increases circulation and helps heal the damage caused by head traumas as well.
• Nervine
This green godsend was part of my personal formula when I was combatting the ravages of Lyme neuroborreliosis too. Nervines are herbs that can help soothe the nerves. While it might seem counter intuitive that an herb that can give you energy can also calm anxiety at the same time, nothing is impossible for nature, and Gotu Kola is a perfect example of this! It provides a nice energy boost, without the nervous jitters that often accompany caffeine. Now that’s an ideal synergistic remedy for any mid-afternoon energy slump, wouldn’t you say?!
• Stress
Not only that, but it’s a bit of an adaptogen too! Adaptogens work via the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) to regulate our response to stress and subdue the fight-or-flight response that seems to get stuck in the “on” position way to often in our society these days. So, Keep Calm and Gotu Kola On!
• Anti-inflammatory and Anti-Bacterial
If you’re dealing with red, hot, inflamed skin, connective tissue, or digestive tissue ailments, GK’s got you covered there too! Used internally or topically, its cool, moistening properties can lend relief to symptoms like these. Plus, if you’re suffering from cellulitis, vulvodynia, eczema, psoriasis, or arthritis, adding some to your bath water (or as a poultice) will have you saying, “Gota-Kola, take me awaaaaayyyyy…….”
• Muscle & Connective Tissue Tonic
Still not amazed? I can keep going…If you’re dealing with painful degenerative conditions of the muscles and connective tissues, like often happens with things like Lyme and other chronic illnesses, Gotu Kola can work wonders. It did for me and my compressed fascia! I partook of this blessed Herbal Ally religiously to restore the flexibility and sponginess to my connective tissues and give them their mobility back!
